Brief Excerpt of Jung’s Journey

In one of Jung’s many encounters with his own unconscious, Jung recalled one of his many visions. Jung stated, “I was sitting at my desk once more, thinking over my fears. Then I let myself drop. Suddenly, it was as though the ground literally gave way beneath my feet, and I plunged down into dark depths. I could not fend off a feeling of panic”. In Jung’s vision, he lands in a sticky mass enveloped by darkness. Then he encounters a dwarf with dry, shriveled skin at the entrance of a cave. He squeezes through the cave’s narrow opening and wades through icy water until he comes to a glowing red crystal. He lifts the crystal and finds a hollow with running water. In the water, he sees the corpse of a boy with a head wound, an enormous black beetle, and a red sun rising out of the depths. Jung stated, “I had the feeling that I was in the land of the dead”. He had just confronted his own unconscious. Jung realized he was suffering from psychic disturbance after this and several other dreams and fantasies involving corpses and death. Jung went through everything an insane person would go through. However, Jung had an astounding capacity to step away from those difficult experiences and instead chose to observe and to understand what was happening. Jung did not let fear overcome him; instead, he decided to dive deeper into his fears with curiosity. The individuation and healing process can often feel like we are going crazy, but in truth, moving through our fears, letting go of the illusion of being in control, is a necessary component of waking up.
