Depth-Oriented Therapy

Depth Psychology is a holistic, spiritual approach to healing that consists of numerous eclectic therapeutic approaches that explore the underworld of the unconscious psyche.  Depth-oriented approaches utilize a conglomerate of psycho dynamic approaches such as Jungian analytical psychology, object relations, humanistic, existential, trans-personal, Gestalt, along with numerous other modalities.

Depth psychology is non-pathologizing and strength affirming to guide us through the exploration of the deeper hidden aspects of our human lived experience instead of the more traditional reductive clinical approach. When we look underneath the superficial conscious realm, lift the veil to better understand our unconscious patterns, and those of our ancestors, we connect with meaning and purpose in life. Depth-oriented approaches respect the language of psyche, imagery, thoughts, metaphor, colors, numerology, dreams, and archetypal patterns.

A depth perspective peers through a different lens, which allows us to see the subtle, often overlooked nuances, that guide our life. The language of psyche connects us with something larger than our everyday selves. In doing so this process illuminates what had been hidden in the unconscious realm and raises them into conscious awareness.

Depth-oriented approaches focus on greater understanding of self, psyche and soul, human development and personality formation for the explicit purpose of individuation.  Individuation, or self-realization, is the process of harnessing one’s unconscious potential to bring it into conscious existence. This process helps us bridge the gap between the unconscious psyche and the conscious ego to discover a more potent sense of meaning and purpose in life.

Jung believed that psychic disturbance was a result of internal imbalances often experienced as a sense of alienation from our deeper personality, or what he referred to as the ‘Self’.  Jungian analytic or depth psychology seeks to restore our connection to our soul or authentic self, the essence of who we really are.

Depth psychotherapies are highly diversified adaptable and flow with primary focus on increased self-awareness. Depth psychological modalities are highly effective approaches to healing and solution-focused. Existential psycho-therapy or psycho-spiritual modalities share the same values, and are considered to be one of the many depth psychotherapies.

Depth Psychology & Trauma

When we suffer from trauma the ego goes into a defensive posture to protect us so we can survive and cope.  The ego’s primary job is to protect us from harm and has the capacity to develop new coping mechanisms and can invent defenses mechanisms.  The ego erects imaginary walls that both terrify us protect us from suffering, but the wound remains lodged deep in psyche.

While coping mechanisms helped us survive past traumatic events, over time the denial, repression and suppression of the truth, eventually start to rise to the surface and cause pain and suffering.  Depth-oriented approaches allow us to access deeply embodied trauma, and to unearth truth.  We can only heal by facing our truths, make new meaning of the event(s), changing many of our old stories that define us, and then moving into acceptance and forgiveness of self and others. 

Depth-oriented therapists help us heal soul wounds and injuries and allow us to feel whole again. Trauma and emotional wounds can be healed, and transcended, so they no longer define us. Transcendence evokes understanding and clarity so we can view our wounds and our self from a more compassionate and empathetic perspective.
